Abstract:
Expansin is a kind of cell wall loosening protein. In addition to regulate the growth and development of plants, it plays an important role in plant response to various environmental stress. Here, we comprehensively summurized the structural characteristics, regulatory mechanism, and functional roles of expansins in different plant species. Firstly, the multiple functions of expansins in plant growth and development were summarized, including the development of vegetative organs (root, stem, leaf), reproductive organs (flower, fruit, seed), stomatal patterning, secondary growth and other processes. Also, the involvement of expansins in the regulation of phytohormone response was investigated. Moreover, the diverse regulatory roles of expansins in response to various abiotic and biotic stresses related to salt, drought, heat, cold, heavy metal, nutrient deficiency, and pathogens were explored. This review will be helpful to better understand the molecular regulation mechanism of plant development and environmental adaptability.
