Background:
Delirium is a common and serious complication among hospitalized older adults, associated with various adverse effects. Although constipation is prevalent in this population, its role as a potential risk factor for delirium remains underexplored.
Purpose:
The retrospective chart review of hospitalized patients aged ≥65 years was done to examine the association between constipation and delirium and to evaluate the influence of various confounding variables. Statistical analyses included multivariable logistic regression to adjust for confounders.
Result:
The study showed a statistically significant association between constipation and delirium (P = .04). Race also showed a significant correlation with delirium (P = .05). Patients with delirium had a longer mean hospital stay (13.4 days) compared with those without delirium (11.1 days; P = .0083). Constipation is a significant and modifiable risk factor for delirium in hospitalized older adults. Early recognition and management of constipation may reduce delirium incidence and improve outcomes.
