Objective:
To review the relationship between 24-h movement behaviors and internalizing and externalizing problems in children, with the aim of providing recommendations for the development of public health policies.
Methods:
After searching the databases of CNKI, Web of Science, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and Cochrane Library by computer (searched up to January 2024), two researchers performed literature screening, data extraction, and quality evaluation. Frequency analysis was used to statistically analyze studies related to potential positive benefits.
Results:
A total of 5 documents (6 studies) were included, involving 32,713 children aged 3 to 14 years. This study found that adherence to screen time (ST) guidelines, sleep guidelines, and combined ST and sleep guidelines were positively associated with improvements in externalizing problems, with the most significant effects observed for adherence to combined ST and sleep guidelines. However, adherence to any guidelines did not show a clear association with improvements in internalizing problems.
Conclusion:
Adherence to 24-h movement behavior guidelines is associated with improvements in externalizing problems, but further studies are needed to explore the relationship between adherence to these guidelines and internalizing problems. These findings suggest that public health policies should recommend healthy behavior practices for children and adolescents to prevent and control potential mental health issues.
