Principles of Soft-Tissue Coverage for Orthopaedic Surgeons
Abstract:
Soft-tissue coverage is a critical component of orthopaedic care in the setting of soft-tissue compromise. The goal of soft-tissue management is to provide adequate coverage while promoting expedited healing and recovery of function. It is important to explore the principles of soft-tissue coverage and thorough assessment, timely intervention, and interdisciplinary teamwork; describe the stages of wound healing, setting the stage for coverage through appropriate assessment, timely administration of antibiotics and débridement, and initial wound care; and then define coverage options including skin grafts, flap coverage, dermal substitutes, and negative-pressure wound therapy.
