Parental educational aspirations are linked to shorter sleep duration in Japanese junior high students, partly due to cram school attendance. This highlights the need for sleep hygiene education, especially in non-metropolitan areas.
Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Sleep Medicine
- Educational Psychology
Background:
- Japanese children often experience short sleep durations, potentially linked to the educational system.
- Empirical data on the association between educational pressures and children's sleep is limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the relationship between parental educational aspirations and sleep duration in Japanese school-aged children.
- To investigate the mediating role of cram school attendance in this relationship.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of a nationally representative sample from the Japanese Longitudinal Study of Children and Parents (JLSCP).
- Inclusion of children in grades 5-9 (ages 10-15) and their mothers.
- Statistical examination of associations and mediation effects.
Main Results:
- Higher parental educational aspirations correlated with shorter sleep duration in junior high students, but not elementary students.
- Cram school attendance partially mediated the association between parental aspirations and reduced sleep duration.
- An inverse association between parental aspirations and sleep duration was observed in non-metropolitan areas.
Conclusions:
- Parental educational aspirations can reduce junior high students' sleep duration through increased cram school attendance.
- The findings suggest a need to re-evaluate the role of cram schools and promote sleep hygiene education.
- Targeted sleep support is crucial for children in non-metropolitan areas facing high educational pressures.

This style is strict and controlling, with little room for open dialogue. Authoritarian parents demand obedience and often enforce rules with minimal warmth. Children raised this way may lack social skills and initiative, usually comparing themselves to others unfavorably.
