Low adiponectin levels predict major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). A threshold of 1.8 ng/mL identified patients at higher risk for MACEs and heart failure.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Biochemistry
- Clinical Medicine
Background:
- Decreased adiponectin levels are linked to adverse left ventricular remodeling and major adverse cardiac events (MACEs).
- This study investigates the long-term MACEs following ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in relation to adiponectin levels.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the association between serum adiponectin levels and long-term MACEs in STEMI patients.
- To identify a potential cut-off value of adiponectin for predicting MACEs post-STEMI.
Main Methods:
- Prospective study of 73 STEMI patients.
- Measurement of serum adiponectin and other laboratory parameters.
- Assessment of myocardial revascularization, echocardiography, and MACEs over time.
Main Results:
- 24 patients (32.87%) experienced MACEs, with 19 in the low adiponectin group (≤1.8 ng/mL).
- Heart failure was significantly more prevalent in the low adiponectin group (19.17% vs 4.1%).
- Kaplan-Meier analysis and logistic regression confirmed adiponectin as a significant predictor of MACEs (p=0.011).
Conclusions:
- Serum adiponectin levels are significantly associated with MACEs in STEMI survivors.
- An adiponectin cut-off value of 1.8 ng/mL during hospitalization effectively identifies patients at risk for MACEs.
