Purpose:
Residency program standards emphasize self-evaluation as a core component; however, there is little guidance on how to teach, assess, or apply this skill within residency. The objective of this paper is to describe a longitudinal self-reflection training activity grounded in growth mindset theory that was developed and implemented for pharmacy residents.
Summary:
The mindset training activity was first implemented in July 2020, and the activity continues to be included as a required portion of the program. After reading Carol Dweck's book on growth mindset and participating in a group discussion on mindset, residents engaged in quarterly self-reflection activities related to their mindset on specific residency tasks using a Likert-based reflection tool. The activity was designed to promote awareness of mindset shifts over time. The authors share materials and experiences as an opportunity for other programs to implement this growth mindset activity for residents.
Conclusion:
Residents who embrace a growth mindset may demonstrate improved learning, attitudes, patient care, and teamwork. A longitudinal growth mindset training activity may serve as a feasible, effective, and replicable model to teach and assess resident self-reflection. Timed at an optimal point in residents' professional careers, the activity was designed to support residents in developing a framework for approaching and embracing opportunities, repurposing failure, and enhancing professional development.
