Aquatic functional assessment scale (AFAS): A proposal for adaptation to Parkinson's disease (AFAS-PD)

Objective:
To describe the adaptation process of the assessment of aquatic motor skills using the Aquatic Functional Assessment Scale (AFAS) for people with Parkinson's disease (PD) (AFAS-PD).
Methodology:
Cross-sectional study, filmed assessment in aquatic environment to score 32 motor skills: 8 adaptation phase (A), 9 mastering of the liquid medium (D), 7 specialized therapeutic exercises (E) and 8 global fitness (Cd).
Results:
61 people with PD, mean age of 67.4 (±9.1) years, which 50.82 % were female and mostly with Hoehn & Yahr (HY) stage 2 (37.70 %) and 3 (47.54 %). The A and E phases showed notable results, with participants reaching, respectively, 65 % and 80.6 % of the total score. In the D and Cd phases, participants achieved high scores, reaching 52.2 % and 59 %, respectively.
Conclusion:
The adaptation of the AFAS-PD enable the identification of areas of competence skills and limitations within the poll, allowing for a personalized and effective prescription of aquatic physiotherapy exercises.
