Impact of Cephalic Index on Intraocular Pressure as Measured by Rebound Tonometry in Ophthalmologically Normal Dogs

Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to determine whether cephalic index (CI) affects intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement using rebound tonometry.
Methods:
33 client-owned dogs were included. Measurements of skull length and width were taken using calipers, and CI was calculated as (skull width (mm) x 100)/(skull length (mm)). IOP measurements were taken using rebound tonometry (iCare TonoVet).
Results:
33 dogs were included in this study. CI ranged from 45-105, with an average of 63. Measured IOP was not impacted by CI (p = 0.2604).
Conclusions:
No effect of CI was detected when using the TonoVet to measure IOP. A larger study may be necessary to determine if CI affects IOP using various methods of IOP measurement.
