Exploring predisposing factors in the wellbeing of Iranian emigrant nurses: A qualitative study

The demand for nursing expertise has increased worldwide, resulting in a significant increase in the global recruitment of nurses. However, it is important to prioritize the wellbeing of immigrant nurses to successfully integrate them into their new work environments. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the main factors that influence the wellbeing of Iranian emigrant nurses.

Qualitative design was used in this study, specifically the conventional content analysis approach, to collect and analyze data. The study involved conducting 12 in-depth, semistructured interviews with nine Iranian emigrant nurses who are currently practicing abroad. Participants were selected using purposive and snowball sampling methods. The interviews were conducted via Skype from April 2023 to March 2024. Data analysis was performed using the Landman and Grenheim method, supported by MAXQDA (20) software. Additionally, the trustworthiness of the study findings was ensured by following Lincoln and Guba's criteria.

During the data analysis, five main categories emerged as predisposing wellbeing factors, including a. "Feeling Understood", b. "Psychological Support", c. "Positive Interaction", d. "Labor Protection", and e. "Social Support". Data analysis indicated that the main concern of Iranian emigrant nurses was "Feeling Understood", which plays a key role in their wellbeing.

Ensuring the wellbeing of international nurses is crucial given the high demand for their expertise. It is essential to recognize and address the specific needs of immigrant nurses, offering support, fostering positive interactions, and guaranteeing job security. Policymakers must prioritize these aspects to attract and retain international nurses.
