    Abstract:

    This paper presents the design, development and characterization of FascialSense, a novel handheld device for the detection of densification of fascial tissue surrounding various structures in the human body. The device can be used for detection of deep fascial densification points that cause Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS). In particular, FascialSense, the device can be used for the detection of densified nodules, as well as fascial constrictions within musculoskeletal fibers, which result in Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS). The proposed probe has the potential to overcome the limitations of current approaches, which rely on subjective physician-dependent detection or are hindered by bulky and expensive probes. The sensor leverages the principles of macrobending of a plastic optical fiber by embedding the fiber in a low stiffness resin and detecting the deformation of the resin probe as a change in intensity of light transmitted through the fiber. The device was calibrated and characterized using a straited phantom in conjunction with static loading and unloading tests. From the calibration data a sensitivity of 0.0947 V/N was found providing a viable, cost-effective, technology-driven tool for the detection of fascial densification in clinical settings.
