Social Scripts02:10

Social Scripts

10.2K
People tend to know what behavior is expected of them in specific, familiar settings. A script is a person’s knowledge about the sequence of events expected in a specific setting (Schank & Abelson, 1977). Essentially, scripts are a particular kind of schema, one containing default values for the features within an event. In the restaurant example, the script's features include the props (e.g., tables, menu, food, and money), the roles to be played (e.g., customer and waiter),...

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

43.4K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Factors Influencing Attraction V: Social Skills

462
Social skills play a crucial role in shaping interpersonal interactions and enhancing individuals' ability to navigate various social environments successfully. These skills contribute to personal and professional success, influencing how others perceive and treat individuals. High social skills provide distinct advantages in numerous settings, including romantic relationships, politics, and legal proceedings. In courtroom settings, for instance, defendants who exhibit strong social skills are...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

214
Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...

Summary

Virtual reality (VR) simulations can partially reflect adolescent risky alcohol decisions. Prior alcohol experience increases virtual risk-taking, while knowledge of blood alcohol concentration decreases it, suggesting VR

Area of Science:

  • Adolescent health
  • Public health interventions
  • Virtual reality applications

Background:

  • Risky alcohol consumption is a major public health issue among adolescents in Western countries.
  • Traditional interventions for risky drinking require significant resources.
  • Virtual reality (VR) offers immersive, resource-efficient alternatives for behavioral interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore if established drinking motives and factors for risky drinking decisions transfer to a virtual reality (VR) environment.
  • To identify determinants of risky drinking decisions within the VR FestLab simulation.

Main Methods:

  • 161 Danish adolescents (aged 14-18) participated in a cluster-randomized study using the VR FestLab simulation.
  • Data collected included demographics, alcohol/drug use, sensation seeking, and refusal skills.
  • Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling analyzed virtual risk decisions.

Main Results:

  • 73.9% of participants reported lifetime binge drinking.
  • Prior alcohol experience was associated with a 4.31 times higher likelihood of virtual risk decisions.
  • Awareness of blood alcohol concentration was linked to a reduced likelihood of virtual risk decisions (OR 0.32).

Conclusions:

  • VR simulations partially replicate real-world risky drinking behaviors.
  • Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms of behavioral transfer in VR.
  • Investigating the translation of virtual behaviors to real-world actions is crucial for VR intervention efficacy.
