Practice Patterns of Physical Therapists Screening and Assessing Cancer-Related Fatigue: A Cross-Sectional

Background:
Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common distressing problem. The purpose of this study was to describe the practice patterns of physical therapists (PTs) using CRF screening and assessment tools prior to publication of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) CRF clinical practice guideline and to identify gaps in PT practice related to this guideline.
Methods:
An electronic survey was sent to PTs who treat patients with cancer. Demographic data and information regarding utilization of CRF screening and assessment measures were collected.
Results:
Seventy-three PTs completed the survey. Screen¬ing measures were used by 52 PTs (71.2%) and 40 (54.8%) utilized assessment measures. Screening and evaluation measures that received a CRF clinical practice guideline Grade A, very strong, or B, strong, recommendations were utilized by between 0-25 (0-34%) of the respondents.
Conclusions:
Allied health providers have room for improvement in utilizing evidence-based CRF screening and assessment measures. The findings of this study can guide future implementation of high-quality CRF screening and assessment measures.
