Background:

Europe's general practice faces a significant workforce crisis, with Ireland projecting a shortfall of 1660 general practitioners by 2028.
A gap exists between Irish health system strategies and the daily experiences of general practitioners (GPs).

Purpose of the Study:

To explore Irish general practitioners' perspectives on addressing recruitment and retention challenges.
To identify solutions and necessary supports for sustainable general practice.
To inform targeted policy interventions for healthcare workforce issues.

Main Methods:

Qualitative study using semi-structured online interviews with GPs.
Recruitment via a university-affiliated network.
Thematic analysis by four experienced researchers until data saturation.

Main Results:

A whole-system approach is crucial for addressing recruitment and retention shortfalls.
Role reallocation within multidisciplinary teams is needed for GPs to focus on complex cases.
Digital infrastructure upgrades and administrative task reallocation can reduce GP workload and improve patient care.

Conclusions:
