Abstract:
Lonomia obliqua caterpillar bristle extract (LOCBE) displays strong procoagulant activity in human plasma (HP), whereas in chicken plasma (CP) this effect was significantly less intense. LOCBE shortened clotting time in HP in a dose-dependent manner, while CP exhibited a markedly delayed and attenuated response. In contrast to CP, chromogenic assays showed strong prothrombin activation in HP, whereas CP showed a minimal effect. This study reveals a differential coagulotoxic profile of LOCBE on HP and CP, suggesting that interspecies differences in coagulation factors or plasma components may influence venom activity, potentially representing an evolutionary trait.
