Vascular access is the lifeline for hemodialysis patients. Previous vascular access guidelines, such as the "Fistula First Initiative" prioritized arteriovenous fistula placement in the majority of hemodialysis patients. The recent Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative guidelines vascular access guidelines have emphasized a patient-centered approach focusing on "the right access, for the right patient, at the right time, for the right reason."
