Background:

Thousands of lead-based paint (LBP) inspections and risk assessments have been conducted.
Existing data lacks a centralized database for a housing surveillance system.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine if a database can be developed from LBP risk assessments and inspections.
To support the creation of a LBP housing surveillance system.

Main Methods:

Assembled data from 2128 pre-1978 dwelling units.
Included LBP XRF measurements, floor dust lead, and windowsill dust lead data.
Analyzed data in collaboration with lead poisoning prevention professionals and laboratories.

Main Results:

Report formats varied widely despite compliance with HUD guidelines.
Significant percentages of homes had interior (62%) and exterior (63%) LBP.
Inconsistent naming systems for rooms and components complicated data cleaning.

Conclusions:

Standardized LBP report formats are essential for a national housing surveillance system.
Electronic data capture from XRF analyzers and labs is feasible.
Improved standardization will optimize remediation and research for child protection.
