Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of pupil size on intra-ocular straylight in patients with different types of cataracts.
  • To determine if pupil dilation alters straylight measurements in cataractous eyes.

Main Methods:

  • 85 eyes from 51 participants (average age 66) were studied.
  • Straylight was measured using the Oculus C-Quant before and after pharmacologic mydriasis.
  • Cataract type and opacity location (central/peripheral) were assessed using LOCS III and retro-illumination photography.

Main Results:

  • Mean straylight was 1.57 log(s) both before and after dilation.
  • Individual straylight changes ranged from -0.42 to +0.48 log(s).
  • Nuclear cataracts showed decreased straylight after dilation, while cortical cataracts showed increased straylight.

Conclusions:

  • Pupil dilation causes variable changes in straylight, tending to increase in cortical and decrease in nuclear cataracts.
  • These pupil-size-induced straylight changes are repeatable and reliably measured.
  • Lens opacity location partially predicts these changes, but individual variability is significant.
