Acne Infection01:27

Acne Infection

Acne is a multifactorial skin condition primarily affecting adolescents and young adults, with a global prevalence estimated to exceed 75% in this demographic. The condition is characterized by the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules, pustules, nodules, and, in severe cases, cysts, particularly in areas rich in sebaceous glands such as the face, neck, chest, and back. The pathogenesis involves increased sebum production, follicular hyperkeratinization, colonization by...

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Aesthetic Medicine
  • Laser Technology

Background:

  • Traditional 1550 nm non-ablative fractional resurfacing lasers for acne scars have limitations in energy delivery, cooling, and safety across diverse skin types.
  • A new generation 1550 nm non-ablative resurfacing laser utilizing Focal Point Technology with conical beams for enhanced energy delivery has been developed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy and safety of a novel 1550 nm non-ablative resurfacing laser with Focal Point Technology for improving acne scars in individuals with Fitzpatrick skin types I-VI.
  • To evaluate the potential of this new laser technology to overcome limitations of traditional devices in treating a wide range of skin tones.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, multi-center clinical study was conducted to evaluate the novel 1550 nm non-ablative resurfacing laser.
  • Subjects underwent 1 to 6 treatment sessions.
  • Patient outcomes were assessed using the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) and blinded ECCA scoring.

Main Results:

  • Forty-seven subjects (Fitzpatrick skin types I-VI) participated, with a mean age of 40.2 years; 59.6% were female.
  • 78.0% of subjects showed improvement based on GAIS, with no reported worsening of acne scars.
  • Blinded reviewers achieved 92.7% accuracy in identifying treated subjects, and significant improvement in ECCA scores (85.6 vs. 55.3; p < 0.0001) was observed, with 90.2% achieving at least a 15-point improvement.

Conclusions:

  • The new-generation 1550 nm non-ablative laser with Focal Point Technology is a safe and effective treatment for acne scars across all Fitzpatrick skin types.
  • The laser's innovative design, featuring conical beams and an integrated cooling system, enhances energy delivery while minimizing the risk of hyperpigmentation, particularly in darker skin types.
