Trainees in an integrative oncology (IO) program sought communication skills but gained professional identity, teamwork, and practical skills. This IO training bridges theory to practice in palliative cancer care.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Medical Education
- Palliative Care
Background:
- Integrative oncology (IO) programs are expanding in cancer care.
- Limited research exists on IO training program design.
- This study examines trainee perspectives in a national IO program in Israel.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore trainee experiences in a multidisciplinary IO training program.
- To understand pre- and post-training expectations and outcomes.
- To inform the design of future IO educational initiatives.
Main Methods:
- A 110-hour IO training program combining online and in-person instruction.
- Qualitative analysis of trainee narratives using ATLAS.Ti software.
- Pre- and post-training questionnaires assessed expectations and outcomes.
Main Results:
- Pre-training: focus on enhancing communication skills with patients and professionals.
- Post-training: themes of professional identity, multidisciplinary collaboration, practical IO competencies, and personal/professional growth.
- 33 trainees provided post-training narratives.
Conclusions:
- Trainee expectations centered on communication, while reflections highlighted professional development and IO integration into palliative care.
- IO training facilitates the transition from theoretical knowledge to practical clinical application.
- Further research is needed on long-term outcomes in symptom management and communication.

However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...

Physicians
The physician's primary responsibility is to diagnose illness and direct the medical or surgical treatment of the condition. The authority to admit patients to a healthcare agency or institution and practice care within that setting is granted to physicians by the healthcare agency or institution itself.
