Elite futsal players experienced reduced hip adductor and abductor strength due to a congested match schedule. Hip abduction strength showed prolonged decreases, while adductor strength recovered faster after a rest day.
Area of Science:
- Sports Science
- Exercise Physiology
- Biomechanics
Background:
- Congested match schedules pose significant challenges to athlete recovery and performance.
- Understanding the impact on neuromuscular function is crucial for optimizing training and competition loads in elite sports.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the effects of a congested tournament schedule on isometric muscle strength in elite futsal players.
- To assess neuromuscular fatigue by measuring hip adductor, abductor, and knee flexor strength at various time points post-match.
Main Methods:
- Twelve elite male futsal players participated.
- Isometric strength of hip adductors, abductors, and knee flexors was measured.
- Measurements were taken at baseline (MD1), 24 hours (MD2), 48 hours (rest day), and 72 hours (MD3) post-match.
Main Results:
- Dominant hip adductor strength decreased significantly at MD2 and the rest day compared to baseline.
- Dominant hip abduction strength was significantly lower at MD2, the rest day, and MD3 compared to baseline.
- No significant changes in knee flexor strength were observed across the measured time points.
Conclusions:
- A congested match schedule negatively impacts isometric hip adduction and abduction strength in elite futsal players.
- Hip abduction strength deficits persisted longer than hip adduction strength deficits following a congested schedule.
- Rest days aid in the recovery of hip adductor strength, but prolonged deficits in hip abduction strength may require specific interventions.
