    This study found Sarcocystis parasites in cougar tongues in Colorado, with one type resembling Sarcocystis felis. Molecular analysis confirmed a Sarcocystis felis-like organism in these wild felids.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To identify and characterize Sarcocystis species in the tongues of cougars from Colorado.
    • To compare morphologic features of observed sarcocysts with known Sarcocystis species.
    • To perform molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) region for genetic identification.

    • Macroscopic and light microscopic examination of cougar tongue tissues.
