Maximizing Nursing Education by Utilizing Nursing Students as Standardized Patients

Abstract

Purpose:

Identify the process of teaching students to become standardized patients in clinical labs and simulation. This article documents the benefits of utilizing nursing students as standardized patients.

Design:

A convenience sample of nursing students from a faith-based, private, liberal arts, holistic nursing program participated in this study. Students who successfully completed the junior-level medical-surgical nursing course enrolled in an elective standardized patient course and served as student standardized patients, while junior-level students enrolled in the medical-surgical nursing course participated as nurses in required high-fidelity simulation experiences.

Methods:

Nursing students in various stages of their nursing curriculum enrolled in an elective standardized patient course acting as standardized patients. Students learned the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulations and Learning best standards and worked with faculty to prepare themselves for a specific scenario. Students studied the case scenario and worked with the simulation instructors/facilitators to execute the given simulation for participants. American Society of Perianesthesia Nursing standards were followed. Junior-level nursing students served in the nurse role during the simulation.

Findings:

No negative findings; only increased knowledge base, substantiate own learning, and increase in critical thinking.

Conclusions:

Use of Student Standardized Patients enhances the learning experience for all participants and better prepares a professionally ready clinician.
