Development of the Sexual Organs in the Embryo and Fetus01:15

Development of the Sexual Organs in the Embryo and Fetus

3.1K
Development of the reproductive organs in an embryo starts from a bipotential state. This means the early embryo can develop either male or female reproductive organs. The formation of these organs begins with the growth of gonadal ridges that arise from the intermediate mesoderm during the fifth week of development.
Near the gonadal ridges, two duct systems are present: the mesonephric ducts (Wolffian ducts) and paramesonephric ducts (Müllerian ducts). These ducts form the basis for the...

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive biology
  • Embryology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Developmental differences between female and male early embryos are controversial.
  • Understanding these differences is crucial for reproductive technologies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Investigate developmental differences between female and male bovine embryos.
  • Analyze proliferation and apoptosis in early bovine embryos.

Main Methods:

  • Superovulation in donor cows using hormonal treatments (CIDR + FSH + PGF2α + GnRH).
  • Artificial insemination with X-sorted (female) and Y-sorted (male) semen.
  • Embryo flushing, sex determination, immunofluorescence for proliferation/apoptosis, and RT-PCR for gene expression.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in sex ratio based on semen purity.
  • Female embryos (X-BL) showed higher apoptosis and lower proliferation rates compared to male embryos (Y-BL).
  • Apoptosis-related gene expression was higher, and proliferation-related gene expression was lower in female embryos.

Conclusions:

  • Male bovine embryos exhibit accelerated development compared to female embryos.
  • These findings highlight sex-based developmental disparities in early bovine embryogenesis.
