Fractures: Bone Repair

4.9K
Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the...

Summary

For ceramic restoration repairs, glass ceramics benefit from hydrofluoric acid etching and silanization. Metal oxide ceramics achieve better results with air abrasion and MDP-containing primers, optimizing dental repair outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Restorative Dentistry
  • Biomaterials

Background:

  • Ceramic restorations are susceptible to fractures and wear, necessitating effective repair strategies.
  • The choice of repair protocol can significantly influence the longevity and success of ceramic restorations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and synthesize evidence on the effectiveness of various protocols for repairing ceramic dental restorations.
  • To identify optimal treatment strategies for different types of ceramic materials.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive electronic literature search was performed in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase up to July 31st, 2025.
  • MeSH terms were utilized for the search, followed by title/abstract screening and full-text analysis of retrieved records.
  • 126 studies were included in the review, acknowledging significant methodological heterogeneity.

Main Results:

  • Bond strength was the most commonly assessed outcome, followed by ultrastructural, chemical, color, and mechanical property evaluations.
  • Significant variation in methodologies across studies was observed.
  • Specific protocols showed differential efficacy based on ceramic type.

Conclusions:

  • For glass-ceramic repairs, combining hydrofluoric acid etching with silanization is recommended.
  • For metal oxide ceramic repairs, air abrasion coupled with an MDP-containing primer yields superior outcomes.
