Unlocking the Sustainability Benefits of Valorizing Flare Gas for Fuels

Associated gas, primarily methane, is often flared during crude oil extraction due to high collection costs, resulting in around 150 billion cubic meters flared annually, contributing to 400 million tons of CO2 equivalent emissions. This practice, mainly as an act of economic expediency, is detrimental to the environment and human health, increasing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. This study demonstrates that converting associated gas into transportation fuels at wellheads can help mitigate climate change and improve sustainability. By employing cost-benefit analysis, life cycle assessment, and health impact evaluations, it compares benefits across the United States, Russia, Nigeria, and China. Valuing one billion cubic meters of associated gas reveals significant economic ($209-$639 million), climate (2.05 million metric tons CO2 averted), and health benefits (25-461 avoided deaths). This triple benefit underscores the potential for an industry shift from flaring to fuel production and encourages policymakers and financial institutions to support flare gas valorization initiatives.
