Abstract:
The study of neoplasia across species not only helps to gain better understanding of neoplasia in animals but also studying these neoplasms with an evolutionary perspective may aid in understanding neoplasia as a whole. Evolutionary oncology started with Peto's paradox, where larger longer lived animals are expected to have more neoplasia but they actually do not. This paradox has led not only to the evaluation of many animal species for neoplasia prevalence based on size but also to the evaluation of their genomes to evaluate for cancer protective mechanisms that these species may have evolved.
