Compulsive exercise (CE) is linked to eating disorder (ED) symptoms, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms, and perfectionism. However, depressive symptoms showed a negative association with CE in this study.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- Compulsive exercise (CE) is frequently observed in individuals with eating disorders (ED).
- CE is associated with a more severe clinical presentation in ED.
- This study investigated the relationship between CE, ED symptoms, and other psychological features.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the associations between compulsive exercise (CE) and eating disorder (ED) symptoms.
- To explore the relationship between CE and core psychological features like obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms, anxiety, perfectionism, and depression.
- To understand the role of CE in the context of ED and other psychological conditions.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study involving 3105 participants from the Eating Disorders Genetics Initiative-Sweden.
- Multiple linear regression analyses were used to investigate associations.
- The Compulsive Exercise Test (CET) and its subscales were used to measure CE.
Main Results:
- Eating disorder symptoms, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms, and perfectionism were uniquely positively associated with compulsive exercise (CE).
- Depressive symptoms showed a unique negative association with CE when controlling for other constructs.
- Each subscale of the Compulsive Exercise Test (CET) demonstrated distinct patterns of association with the examined psychological features.
Conclusions:
- The findings align with previous research and the cognitive-behavioral model of CE.
- CE may be particularly clinically relevant when co-occurring with ED symptoms.
- Further research is needed to clarify the directionality of associations between OCD symptoms, perfectionism, and CE, especially in non-ED populations.
