Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how shoe recommendations based on gait analysis impact runners' subjective perceptions of comfort, performance, and injury reduction.
  • To compare these perceptions with objective spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters.

Main Methods:

  • Single-blind crossover randomized controlled trial with 21 female runners.
  • Four 5-min treadmill trials were conducted: own shoes (OS), experimental shoe 1 (basic), OS, experimental shoe 2 (gait-matched).
  • Experimental shoes were identical except for color; one was deceptively labeled 'gait-matched'.

Main Results:

  • Subjective ratings for comfort, performance, and injury reduction differed significantly between own and experimental shoes (p < 0.001).
  • Own shoes were rated most comfortable, followed by gait-matched, then basic shoes.
  • Objective spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters showed no significant differences between shoes (p ≥ 0.157).

Conclusions:

  • Shoe recommendations and descriptions can manipulate subjective perceptions of comfort and preference without altering biomechanical parameters.
  • Runners should be cautious of recommendations based solely on perceived comfort or gait analysis descriptors.
  • Subjective perceptions of running shoes can be artificially influenced.
