Background:
Menstrual cups are an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional menstrual hygiene products. Despite their advantages, adoption remains limited due to misconceptions and lack of awareness. This study aims to assess and compare acceptance and usage of menstrual cup among female medical and engineering students.
Methods:
A cross-sectional, survey-based study was conducted among female undergraduate students at SRM University. The study population involves female MBBS and Engineering students. Participants were evaluated using a structured questionnaire assessing their understanding and usage of menstrual cups. Descriptive statistics and independent t-tests were applied to determine statistical significance (P < 0.05). Data were analyzed using SPSS software.
Results:
Among 265 participants, comprising 139 female medical students and 126 female engineering students, medical students demonstrated significantly higher scores in compared to engineering students. However, practice levels were not significantly different (P > 0.05). Misconceptions and cultural discomforts were identified as key barriers to usage.
Conclusion:
Despite increased awareness menstrual cup, usage is relatively low in both group students. Organized educational programs are needed to promote sustainable menstrual hygiene practices.
