Coping Strategies: Emotion Focused01:20

Coping Strategies: Emotion Focused

426
Emotion-focused coping refers to a set of strategies aimed at managing the emotional impact of stressors, rather than directly addressing their causes. This approach involves altering one's emotional response to stressful situations to reduce their psychological effects. For example, individuals might talk with a friend or engage in activities like journaling to express their feelings. Such actions can help achieve emotional clarity or release, providing the psychological stability needed...

Self-Regulation01:25

Self-Regulation

206
Self-regulation, also known as self-control, encompasses a range of cognitive and behavioral processes that allow individuals to adjust their internal states and outward actions to align with socially acceptable norms and long-term goals. It plays a fundamental role in adaptive functioning, from resisting impulsive behaviors to persisting through challenging tasks. While its benefits are widely recognized, self-regulation is not limitless. Muraven and Baumeister's theory posits that...

Socioemotional Development during Infancy01:30

Socioemotional Development during Infancy

418
Socio-emotional development in infancy is primarily shaped by early emotional responses and social connections, with temperament playing a central role. Temperament refers to the consistent patterns in an individual's emotional and behavioral responses, observable even in infancy. By examining temperament, researchers can better understand an infant's unique ways of interacting with the world, influencing subsequent personality and socio-emotional growth.

Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

370
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy01:24

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

340
Cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBTs) are grounded in the belief that our thoughts profoundly influence our emotions and actions. Advocates of CBT emphasize three core assumptions: first, that cognitions are identifiable and measurable; second, that they are central to psychological functioning; and third, that irrational or maladaptive beliefs can be replaced with rational and adaptive ones. This transformative approach to therapy has paved the way for specific models such as Albert...

Family Therapy01:30

Family Therapy

490
Family therapy conceptualizes psychological challenges as arising from dysfunctional interactions within the family unit, rather than as isolated issues within individuals. This approach seeks to address and transform the patterns of communication, roles, and relationships within families to promote healthier dynamics and emotional well-being for all members.
Strategic Family Therapy
Strategic family therapy emphasizes resolving communication barriers and improving problem-solving abilities...

Area of Science:

  • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Psychotherapy Research
  • Developmental Psychology

Background:

  • Emotion dysregulation is a key risk factor for childhood externalizing behaviors.
  • Existing treatments may not fully address underlying affective conflict.
  • A manualized, short-term psychodynamic intervention is needed for this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of Regulation-Focused Psychotherapy for Children (RFP-C).
  • To assess RFP-C's impact on oppositional defiant symptoms in children aged 5-12.
  • To examine the maintenance of treatment gains.

Main Methods:

  • RFP-C is a 16-session child play therapy and 4-parent session protocol.
  • Therapists utilize symbolic play, affect labeling, and the "triangle of conflict" model.
  • Feasibility and efficacy were assessed via pilot data (n=3) and a randomized controlled trial (n=43).

Main Results:

  • The study demonstrated feasibility and high adherence to the RFP-C protocol.
  • Statistically significant reductions in oppositional defiant symptoms were observed.
  • Symptom reduction was maintained at three- and six-month follow-ups.

Conclusions:

  • RFP-C is a feasible and effective intervention for children with externalizing behaviors linked to emotion dysregulation.
  • Further research should include multisite trials and explore long-term durability.
  • Clinical implementation requires specialized training and tailored interventions.
