Abstract:
We report the cases of a 68-year-old man and a 78-year-old woman affected by a tumour of the parotid gland measuring 5.5cm and 6.5cm, respectively. The clinical examination found an aspect suggesting an infiltration of the parotid gland in the first case and a rapid evolution in the second case. After excision, the pathological examination showed nodular encapsulated, non-infiltrated lesions composed of adipocytes intermixed with oncocytic cell nests, with no sign of malignancy. These were two cases of oncocytic lipoadenomas of the parotid gland. Oncocytic lipoadenoma corresponds to a very rare subtype of sialolipoma, of which 38 cases have been reported in the literature since its first description in 1998. The article reviews the pathological descriptions of the tumour in comparison with its differential diagnoses, such as oncocytic-type pleomorphic adenoma and oncocytoma of the salivary glands.
