In order to determine the change pattern of biochar application on the yield of three major global crops, we quantitatively explored the effects of climatic conditions, soil physicochemical properties, and the characteristics and application amount of biochar on the yield of the crops using Meta-analysis, with 192 publications and 1 093 experimental data as the research object. The results showed that compared to those with no biochar application, the application of biochar increased crop yields overall by 15.6% and by 14.4%, 15.5%, and 16.4% for maize, wheat, and rice, respectively. Soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, organic matter, carbon to nitrogen ratio, and organic carbon and total nitrogen content in biochar had the most significant effects on the yields of the three main crops. The Random Forest Model analysis showed that the effect of biochar cracking temperature was relatively unimportant for the yield of maize and rice, and the average annual rainfall was relatively unimportant for the yield of wheat, at which time the R2 for maize, wheat, and rice were 0.795, 0.656, and 0.856, respectively. The results of this study can provide a reference basis for the rational application of biochar in future crop production and help promote the green development of global agricultural production.
