Crystal Field Theory - Octahedral Complexes

Crystal Field Theory
To explain the observed behavior of transition metal complexes (such as colors), a model involving electrostatic interactions between the electrons from the ligands and the electrons in the unhybridized d orbitals of the central metal atom has been developed. This electrostatic model is crystal field theory (CFT). It helps to understand, interpret, and predict the colors, magnetic behavior, and some structures of coordination compounds of transition metals.

Area of Science:

  • Microbiology and Periodontology

Background:

  • Socransky's complexes historically define key bacteria in periodontal disease.
  • Advancements in microbiome analysis allow detailed investigation of periodontal pathogens.
  • Filifactor alocis has recently gained attention as a potential periodontal pathogen.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review existing evidence on Filifactor alocis's role in periodontal disease.
  • To assess the potential for including Filifactor alocis in Socransky's periodontal disease model.

Main Methods:

  • Comprehensive literature search of PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus databases.
  • Inclusion of 24 observational, clinical, in vitro, and animal studies.
  • Synthesis of data on prevalence, host response, and virulence factors.

Main Results:

  • Higher prevalence of F. alocis observed at diseased periodontal sites compared to healthy sites.
  • Periodontal treatment significantly reduced F. alocis levels and improved clinical parameters.
  • In vitro and experimental studies indicate F. alocis possesses virulence attributes similar to known periodontal pathogens.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence is insufficient to formally include F. alocis in Socransky's complexes.
  • F. alocis shows potential as a future addition to Socransky's model.
  • Further highly standardized research is required to confirm F. alocis's pathogenic role and comparability.
