Abstract:
Multiorgan failure and polypharmacy make critically ill intensive care patients particularly susceptible to drug-associated acute kidney injury. A wide spectrum of pathophysiological mechanisms underlies this type of renal injury. In this article, we outline the risk profiles of drugs commonly used in intensive care and provide a brief overview of preventive strategies and treatment options. As many of these drugs are also used in non-intensive care settings, the topic is relevant for doctors both within and beyond hospital settings.
