Professional Values01:29

Professional Values

10.3K
Nurses are responsible for caring for patients during birth, death, illness, and healing. Professional values guide the decisions and actions that nurses make in their careers. If nurses know the decisions and actions to take, providing patients with exceptional care is possible.
The values that are the foundation of the nursing profession are altruism, autonomy, human dignity, and social justice.
First, altruism refers to the concern for the welfare and well-being of others without personal...

Radioactive Decay and Radiometric Dating02:48

Radioactive Decay and Radiometric Dating

36.9K
Radioactivity is a spontaneous disintegration of an unstable nuclide and is a random process, as all the nuclei in the sample do not decay simultaneously. The number of disintegrations per unit time is called the activity (A), which is directly proportional to the number of nuclei in the sample. The decay constant (λ) is an average probability of decay per nucleus in unit time.

The Professional Nurse01:22

The Professional Nurse

6.2K
Professional nurses are not limited to bedside care and are taking roles of greater responsibility. A nurse should have a knowledge-based practice, including personal, theoretical, procedural, cultural, and reflexive knowledge. Additionally, nurses must be competent in cognitive, technical, interpersonal, and ethical/legal skills. Some of the best attributes of successful nurses include the following:
Communication skills: These are critical characteristics, especially speaking and listening.

Nonsense-mediated mRNA Decay02:27

Nonsense-mediated mRNA Decay

11.7K
The Upf proteins that carry out nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) are found in all eukaryotic organisms, including humans. Each protein has an individual role, but they need to work in collaboration. Upf1 is an ATP-dependent RNA helicase that unwinds the RNA helix. Because Upf1 can unwind any RNA, Upf2 and Upf3 are required to help Upf1 discriminate between nonsense and normal mRNAs.
Usually, Upf3 binds to an Exon Junction Complex (EJC) at mRNA splice sites. If a ribosome fully translates the mRNA,...

Interference and Decay01:16

Interference and Decay

431
Forgetting is a complex cognitive phenomenon influenced by several factors, among which interference and decay are particularly prominent. These processes explain why individuals often struggle to retrieve specific information from memory, leading to lapses in recall that can be observed in everyday situations.
Interference occurs when competing memories hinder the retrieval of particular information. It can be classified into two types: proactive and retroactive interference. Proactive...

Summary

Public health information on diet and tooth decay from Canadian professional organizations often exceeds recommended readability levels. Clearer national guidelines are needed for effective public communication on preventing tooth decay.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Nutrition Science
  • Oral Health

Background:

  • Tooth decay is a significant public health issue impacting all age groups.
  • Dietary habits, including food types and consumption frequency, are crucial for tooth decay prevention.
  • Foods and beverages can either protect against or promote tooth decay.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate public-facing information on diet and tooth decay from Canadian professional organizations and regulatory bodies.
  • To assess the readability of this health information.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive search of Canadian websites of professional organizations and regulatory bodies was conducted.
  • Content analysis using NVivo software was performed on selected web pages.
  • Readability testing was applied to approximately two web pages per website focused on diet and tooth decay.

Main Results:

  • 213 web pages from 23 websites contained information on diet and tooth decay; most originated from dental organizations.
  • Messaging varied in depth, with sugar being the most frequently discussed topic (67%).
  • The average Flesch-Kincaid grade level was 7.1, exceeding the recommended grade 6 level, with many pages targeting parents and children.

Conclusions:

  • Canadian health professional websites extensively discuss diet and tooth decay, often targeting parents and children.
  • The readability of much of this online information is higher than the recommended grade 6 level.
  • Developing comprehensive national guidelines for diet and tooth decay communication is recommended to ensure clarity and consistency.
