Depressive rumination predicts later depression, which in turn predicts insomnia in youth. This highlights rumination as a key target for preventing both depression and sleep problems in children and adolescents.
Area of Science:
- Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Developmental Psychology
- Sleep Medicine
Background:
- Sleep disturbances and depressive symptoms are increasingly recognized as bidirectionally related.
- Developmental pathways linking sleep problems and depression in youth are understudied.
- Rumination is a potential cognitive mechanism linking sleep and depression, but its role is unexplored in youth.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate prospective associations between sleep, depression, and rumination in youth.
- To test mediation effects of rumination and depression on sleep problems.
- To explore developmental pathways linking these conditions across childhood and adolescence.
Main Methods:
- Cross-lagged panel model (CLPM) analysis.
- Longitudinal study with 364 participants aged 8–16 years.
- Three yearly assessments of sleep, depression, and rumination.
Main Results:
- Rumination significantly predicted subsequent depression.
- Depression significantly predicted subsequent insomnia.
- Insomnia did not predict later depression or rumination.
- A mediational pathway was identified: rumination influenced insomnia via depression.
Conclusions:
- Depressive rumination contributes to the development of depression in youth.
- Depression, in turn, contributes to the development of insomnia.
- Rumination emerges as a potential target for interventions aimed at mitigating risks for depression and insomnia in young people.

Freezing Point Depression and Boiling Point Elevation
The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which its vapor pressure is equal to ambient atmospheric pressure. Since the vapor pressure of a solution is lowered due to the presence of nonvolatile solutes, it stands to reason that the solution’s boiling point will subsequently be increased. Vapor pressure increases with temperature, and so a solution will require a higher temperature than will pure solvent to achieve any given vapor pressure, including one...
