This study shows that EEG-based neurofeedback targeting alpha-band connectivity in visual areas can enhance brain network communication. This approach improved the detection of low-contrast visual stimuli, particularly in male participants.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Cognitive Science
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Alpha-band brain network communication is crucial for visual processing.
- Disruptions in this network are linked to visual deficits.
- Targeting alpha-band connectivity offers a potential therapeutic avenue.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and evaluate an EEG-based neurofeedback system.
- To target alpha-band connectivity in visual cortical networks.
- To determine if modulating this network enhances low-contrast visual stimulus detection.
Main Methods:
- A randomized, active-controlled study involving 28 participants.
- Real-time auditory neurofeedback to modulate global alpha-band connectivity.
- Feedback targeted visual cortex (active group) or frontal cortex (control group).
- Pre- and post-training assessments of connectivity, visual, and attentional performance.
Main Results:
- 50% of the active group showed increased alpha-band connectivity in the visual cortex.
- Connectivity decreased in control and non-responder groups.
- Improvements in stimulus detection were noted, especially in male participants.
- Effectiveness was influenced by baseline performance.
Conclusions:
- Brief, network-based neurofeedback can effectively enhance alpha-band connectivity in visual areas.
- This approach shows promise for improving visual processing.
- Further research is needed to explore influencing factors and optimize interventions.
