Abstract:
The mental health of higher education students is recognized as a significant public health concern globally. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between academic stress and academic anxiety among Chinese college students, examining the mediating role of cognitive appraisals and the moderating role of academic self-efficacy. A total of 959 students from three colleges in Sichuan and Liaoning Provinces participated. Data were collected using the Academic Stress Scale, the Cognitive Appraisal Measure, the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Academic Anxiety Scale. Moderated mediation analysis was conducted in SPSS 26.0. The results showed that academic stress was positively associated with academic anxiety. Threat appraisal significantly mediated this relationship, whereas challenge appraisal did not. Moreover, academic self-efficacy significantly moderated the relationship between stress and threat appraisal. However, academic self-efficacy strengthened rather than buffered the relationship between academic stress and threat appraisal. This result may reflect China's competitive, exam-oriented environment, in which students with higher academic self-efficacy internalize strong expectations and are more prone to view academic stressors as threats. These findings extend the contextual applicability of social cognitive theory and provide more concrete practical implications for higher education. Specifically, institutions may strengthen stress-management and resilience programs, incorporate cognitive restructuring strategies to reduce threat-based interpretations of academic demands, and balance efforts to enhance self-efficacy with guidance on managing expectations and regulating emotions.
