Abstract:
In Spain, Müller-Weiss disease (MWD) occurs more frequently than the quoted rare incidence elsewhere. The authors analyzed its first and subsequent descriptions for the diverse proposed etiologies, epidemiology, and pathogenesis. Although further studies are warranted, pathogenesis seemingly stems from a navicular dysplasia inducing lateral talar head shift and medial navicular protrusion with resulting paradoxic flatfoot. Not all published cases have true MWD. Failure to report genuine MWD leads to incorrect interpretation of epidemiology and management. This article focuses on etiology and epidemiology, and explains fundamentals of pathogenesis and pathomechanics, the backbones for formulating conservative and surgical management of this challenging condition.
