Abstract:
Müller-Weiss Disease is a rare pathologic condition in which the navicular bone becomes dysplastic and fragments, resulting in osteoarthritis of the adjacent joints. In Canada, diagnosis is through a thorough clinical examination of the patient, plain radiographs, and often a non-weightbearing computed tomography scan. In earlier stages of the disease, prior to major navicular collapse, a valgus-producing calcaneal osteotomy can be considered to offload the lateral part of the navicular. Progression of disease with advanced midfoot arthritis is treated by arthrodesis of the affected joints. Minimally invasive or arthroscopically assisted arthrodesis is becoming increasingly common in Canada.
