Abstract:
The electronic health record (EHR) is often cited as a major contributor to clinician burnout, but efforts to enhance its usability can improve the clinician experience. Key domains for optimization include user personalization, organizational information technology capability, organizational policy, EHR vendor capability, and federal regulations. Each level offers unique opportunities and constraints for EHR advancement. Clinicians as frontline users and subject matter experts should be informed and empowered to drive these improvements to better align EHR functionality with real-world clinical workflows.
