Cross-Sectional Research01:50

Cross-Sectional Research

12.5K
In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...

Attitudes01:54

Attitudes

33.2K
Attitude is our evaluation of a person, an idea, or an object. We have attitudes for many things ranging from products that we might pick up in the supermarket to people around the world to political policies. Typically, attitudes are favorable or unfavorable: positive or negative (Eagly & Chaiken, 1993). And, they have three components: an affective component (feelings), a behavioral component (the effect of the attitude on behavior), and a cognitive component (belief and knowledge;...

Finding Volume Using Cross-Sectional Area

72
For solids whose cross-sectional areas vary in a predictable way, volume can be determined by integrating these areas along an axis perpendicular to the slices. This approach is particularly useful for polyhedral solids, where classical geometric formulas may not be immediately applicable. A tetrahedron provides a clear example of how cross-sectional integration can be applied to a three-dimensional object with continuously changing geometry.Consider a tetrahedron with height h and a base that...

Profile Leveling and Cross Sections01:26

Profile Leveling and Cross Sections

1.7K
Profile leveling and cross-sections are surveying methods used to determine and document terrain elevations for infrastructure projects such as highways, railroads, canals, and pipelines. These methods provide data for earthwork planning and alignment of proposed routes.  Profile leveling involves measuring elevations along a fixed line to create a vertical terrain profile. A surveyor sets up a leveling instrument at the benchmark (BM) and records a backsight (BS) to determine the...

Spinal Cord: Cross-sectional Anatomy

4.9K
The cross-sectional anatomy of the spinal cord offers a detailed view of its complex structure and function within the central nervous system. At the core of the spinal cord lies the gray matter, characterized by its butterfly or "H"-shaped appearance in cross-section. This central region is enveloped by white matter, with the overall structure divided into symmetrical halves by the dorsal median sulcus and the ventral median fissure.
Gray Matter and its Components
Central to the gray matter is...

Summary

University students frequently use both medication and alternative therapies for menstrual pain relief. Most students self-medicate, often advised by family, rather than consulting healthcare professionals for primary dysmenorrhea management.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Public Health
  • Pain Management

Background:

  • Primary dysmenorrhea is a common gynecological issue affecting university students.
  • Effective pain management strategies are crucial for academic and personal well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the treatment methods employed by university students for menstrual pain relief.
  • To identify the prevalence of seeking professional advice versus self-management.

Main Methods:

  • An anonymous online questionnaire was administered to 861 female students at the University of Zagreb.
  • The survey included 22 questions on menstrual characteristics and pain management strategies.
  • Data were collected in April 2021.

Main Results:

  • 90.6% of students used pharmacological methods and 75.3% used non-pharmacological methods for pain relief.
  • Ibuprofen was the most common pharmacological treatment (84.7%).
  • Local heat application (78.7%) and adopting an antalgic position (75.2%) were prevalent non-pharmacological methods.

Conclusions:

  • Croatian university students predominantly self-medicate for menstrual pain, often following family advice.
  • Students experiencing severe pain were more inclined to seek professional help and utilize both treatment types.
  • There is a notable tendency for self-treatment over professional consultation for primary dysmenorrhea in this population.
