Band Theory02:35

Band Theory

17.2K
When two or more atoms come together to form a molecule, their atomic orbitals combine and molecular orbitals of distinct energies result. In a solid, there are a large number of atoms, and therefore a large number of atomic orbitals that may be combined into molecular orbitals. These groups of molecular orbitals are so closely placed together to form continuous regions of energies, known as the bands.
The energy difference between these bands is known as the band gap.

Attribution Theory

Behavior is a product of both the situation (e.g., cultural influences, social roles, and the presence of bystanders) and of the person (e.g., personality characteristics). Subfields of psychology tend to focus on one influence or behavior over others. Situationism is the view that our behavior and actions are determined by our immediate environment and surroundings. In contrast, dispositionism holds that our behavior is determined by internal factors (Heider, 1958).

The Atomic Theory of Matter02:59

The Atomic Theory of Matter

128.4K
The earliest recorded discussion of the basic structure of matter comes from ancient Greek philosophers. Leucippus and Democritus argued that all matter was composed of small, finite particles that they called atomos, meaning “indivisible.” Later, Aristotle and others came to the conclusion that matter consisted of various combinations of the four “elements” — fire, earth, air, and water — and could be infinitely divided. Interestingly, these philosophers...

Social Exchange Theory02:06

Social Exchange Theory

40.8K
We have discussed why we form relationships, what attracts us to others, and different types of love. But what determines whether we are satisfied with and stay in a relationship? One theory that provides an explanation is social exchange theory. According to social exchange theory, we act as naïve economists in keeping a tally of the ratio of costs and benefits of forming and maintaining a relationship with others (Rusbult & Van Lange, 2003).

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Chiropractic has historical roots in conspiracy theories, partly due to its adversarial relationship with mainstream medicine and the American Medical Association (AMA). Understanding this history is crucial for addressing current chiropractic conspiracy theories and the wellness industry

Area of Science:

  • Medical History
  • Sociology of Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Chiropractic has historically positioned itself against mainstream medicine, facing opposition from institutions like the American Medical Association (AMA).
  • The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted concerns about chiropractic conspiracy theories, particularly regarding mRNA vaccines, but deeper historical roots were underexplored.
  • The adversarial relationship between chiropractic and organized medicine has contributed to the development of anticonspiratorial beliefs within some chiropractic circles.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the historical and theoretical relationship between chiropractic and conspiracy theory belief.
  • To inform policymakers, evidence-based chiropractors, and researchers about the origins of conspiracy theories in chiropractic medicine.
  • To analyze how standardized medicine's efforts to undermine alternative medicine may have fostered anticonspiratorial sentiments among chiropractors.

Main Methods:

  • Historical analysis of chiropractic's origins and its relationship with the American Medical Association (AMA).
  • Examination of chiropractic's foundational texts for conspiracy theory elements.
  • Review of chiropractic conspiracy theories that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Main Results:

  • Chiropractic's inception involved positioning against mainstream medical institutions, fostering an environment susceptible to conspiracy theories.
  • The American Medical Association's (AMA) historical opposition to chiropractic contributed to its anticonspiratorial stance.
  • Conspiracy theories within chiropractic persist, with recent examples targeting mRNA vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Conclusions:

  • Understanding the historical context of chiropractic's conflict with organized medicine is essential for accurately addressing current conspiracy theories.
  • Critics risk misinterpreting the motivations behind chiropractic conspiracy theories if historical factors are ignored.
  • The dismissal of alternative medicine may exacerbate the divide between conventional and non-conventional healthcare practices.
