The Evidence for Evolution02:55

The Evidence for Evolution

48.3K
Genetic variations accumulating within populations over generations give rise to biological evolution. Evolutionary changes can result in the formation of novel varieties and entire new species. These changes are responsible for the diverse forms of life inhabiting the planet. The evidence for evolution suggests that all living organisms descended from common ancestors.

Convergent Evolution01:54

Convergent Evolution

33.0K
Evolution shapes the features of organisms over time, ensuring that they are suited for the environments in which they live. Sometimes, selection pressure leads to the rise of similar but unrelated adaptations in organisms with no recent common ancestors, a process known as convergent evolution.

Protein-protein Interfaces02:04

Protein-protein Interfaces

14.7K
Many proteins form complexes to carry out their functions, making protein-protein interactions (PPIs) essential for an organism's survival. Most PPIs are stabilized by numerous weak noncovalent chemical forces. The physical shape of the interfaces determines the way two proteins interact. Many globular proteins have closely-matching shapes on their surfaces, which form a large number of weak bonds. Additionally, many PPIs occur between two helices or between a surface cleft and a...

Eukaryotic Evolution01:24

Eukaryotic Evolution

41.7K
The endosymbiont theory is the most widely accepted theory of eukaryotic evolution; however, its progression is still somewhat debated. According to the nucleus-first hypothesis, the ancestral prokaryote first evolved a membrane to enclose DNA and form the nucleus. Conversely, the mitochondria-first hypothesis suggests that the nucleus was formed after endosymbiosis of mitochondria.
Contrary to the endosymbiont theory, the eukaryote-first hypothesis proposes that the simpler prokaryotic and...

Synteny and Evolution02:31

Synteny and Evolution

3.8K
John H. Renwick first coined the term “synteny” in 1971, which refers to the genes present on the same chromosomes, even if they are not genetically linked. The species with common ancestry tend to show conserved syntenic regions. Therefore, the concept of synteny is nowadays used to describe the evolutionary relationship between species.
Around 80 million years ago, the human and mice lineages diverged from the common ancestor. During the course of evolution, the ancestral...

Reaction Yield02:22

Reaction Yield

60.0K
The theoretical yield of a reaction is the amount of product estimated to form based on the stoichiometry of the balanced chemical equation. The theoretical yield assumes the complete conversion of the limiting reactant into the desired product. The amount of product that is obtained by performing the reaction is called the actual yield, and it may be less than or (very rarely) equal to the theoretical yield.

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Electrochemistry
  • Catalysis

Background:

  • The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a bottleneck in electrocatalyst-based water splitting (WS) for hydrogen production due to slow kinetics.
  • Spinel oxide-based heterostructures (HS) supported by carbon materials offer a cost-effective strategy for OER electrocatalysis, outperforming noble metal catalysts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a novel WO3/NiCo2O4 heterostructure coupled with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) for efficient OER electrocatalysis.
  • To investigate the synergistic effects of interface engineering on the electrochemical activity and stability of the catalyst.

Main Methods:

  • Ultrasonication-assisted hydrothermal synthesis was employed to create the MWCNT@WO3/NiCo2O4 heterostructure.
  • Electrochemical characterization techniques were used to evaluate the catalyst's performance, including overpotential, Tafel slope, charge transfer resistance, and double-layer capacitance.

Main Results:

  • The MWCNT@WO3/NiCo2O4 catalyst exhibited a low overpotential of 323 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 123 mV dec-1.
  • The heterostructure demonstrated reduced charge transfer resistance (2.5 Ω) and high electrochemical double-layer capacitance (48.9 mF cm-2).
  • The catalyst showed superior electrochemical durability exceeding 38 hours.

Conclusions:

  • The rational integration of WO3, NiCo2O4, and MWCNT creates a hierarchically porous heterointerface that enhances charge transport and active site accessibility.
  • The developed MWCNT@WO3/NiCo2O4 heterostructure is a promising cost-effective and high-performance electrocatalyst for OER in water splitting applications.
