Aim:
This randomized clinical trial aimed to assess the postoperative pain after root canal treatment performed in a single visit with BioRoot root canal sealer (BRCS) or AH Plus root canal sealer (ARCS) in patients with different pulpal and periapical diagnosis.
Materials And Methods:
The double-blind, single-center, trial procedure began after ethical clearance and registration with the Indian clinical trial registry (CTRI/2021/09/036338), and it follows the Preferred Reporting Items for RAndomized Trials in Endodontic 2020 criteria. The trial included 94 patients with a Periapical Index <3 and preoperative pain score calculated with visual analogue scale (VAS) ≤4 and were randomly assigned to two sealer groups: BRCS and ARCS. Postoperative pain was evaluated at 2, 4, 6, 8, 24, and 48 h. Independent and paired sample t-test were done to compare sealer groups. P <0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results:
The trial included 86 patients after dropouts and exclusions. The BRCS group had statistically significant lower pain compared to ARCS at 4 (P = 0.04), 6 (P = 0.05), and 8 h (P = 0.03) intervals. Comparing pain reduction between the groups, there is an increase in pain level in the ARCS group for the initial 4-h time period, but they were not statistically significant. When the diagnostic parameter was compared, ARCS exhibited significantly higher pain in the symptomatic irreversible pulpitis with symptomatic apical periodontitis for the initial 6 h (P = 0.01).
Conclusion:
BRCS, when used for single visit endodontic treatment, decreased the occurrence of postoperative pain at 4, 6, and 8 h when compared to the ARCS group.
