Abstract:
Despite extensive research on psychological reactance in environmental communication, two critical gaps remain. First, little is known about how trait reactance, as a stable dispositional characteristic, shapes responses to water-conservation messaging. Second, existing work largely assumes that reactance processes operate uniformly across geographic contexts. This study addresses both gaps by examining how trait reactance influences attitudes and behavioral intentions toward water conservation and protection recommendations, and whether these psychological pathways vary by region. Using covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM), we analyzed survey data from 1244 Texas residents. We compared respondents from the Houston metropolitan area (n = 300) and the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex (n = 340)-two regions that differ markedly in cold-weather event exposure. Results showed that trait reactance did not directly affect attitudes but operated through two mediating pathways: heightened freedom-threat perceptions and reduced acceptance of descriptive norms. Regional comparisons revealed pronounced context dependence. Freedom threat strongly predicted attitudes in Houston but not in Dallas, whereas descriptive norms exerted a stronger influence in Dallas. These patterns suggest that repeated exposure to cold-weather advisories in Dallas produces habituation effects that attenuate sensitivity to freedom threats while strengthening reliance on community norms. Theoretically, these findings challenge the assumption that freedom threat universally mediates trait reactance effects, demonstrating that local exposure histories and communication environments constitute boundary conditions for reactance theory. Practically, results indicate that effective water conservation messaging should be geographically tailored, emphasizing autonomy-supportive framing in contexts with infrequent advisories and norm-based appeals where behaviors are routinized.
