New sulfatomolybdates, β-K2[MoO2(SO4)2] and Na2[MoO2(SO4)2], exhibit novel layered structures. These findings expand the known dimensionality of sulfatomolybdate materials.
Area of Science:
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Solid-State Chemistry
- Materials Science
Background:
- Sulfatomolybdates are a class of inorganic compounds with limited known structures, primarily exhibiting low-dimensional anions.
- Understanding the structural diversity and properties of sulfatomolybdates is crucial for exploring new materials.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize new sulfatomolybdate compounds with potentially novel structural features.
- To investigate the structural characteristics, cation ordering, and thermal properties of the synthesized compounds.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of β-K2[MoO2(SO4)2] and Na2[MoO2(SO4)2] under specific reaction conditions.
- Characterization using single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).
- Computational analysis using MAPLE calculations.
Main Results:
- Discovery and synthesis of two new sulfatomolybdates: β-K2[MoO2(SO4)2] and Na2[MoO2(SO4)2].
- These compounds exhibit layered structures, a first for this class of materials, formed by corner-sharing sulfate tetrahedra and molybdate octahedra.
- β-K2[MoO2(SO4)2] shows ordered potassium cations, while Na2[MoO2(SO4)2] displays disordered sodium cations and an incommensurate modulated structure at room temperature that orders at higher temperatures.
- Both compounds demonstrate high thermal stability as indicated by TGA.
Conclusions:
- The synthesis of β-K2[MoO2(SO4)2] and Na2[MoO2(SO4)2] introduces layered structures to sulfatomolybdates, significantly expanding their known structural dimensionality.
- The distinct cation ordering and modulated structure in the sodium compound offer insights into structure-property relationships.
- The high thermal stability suggests potential applications in various material science domains.
