  • Understanding the relationship between cardiac function and PCa is crucial for risk assessment and prognosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between prediagnostic cardiac function and the risk and prognosis of prostate cancer.
  • To evaluate the interplay between echocardiographic parameters and PCa development and outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the Prostate Cancer Study throughout life (PROCA-life) cohort, including 2514 men from the Tromsø Study.
  • Employed echocardiographic examinations and Cox proportional hazard models to analyze associations between cardiac function and PCa risk/mortality.
  • Followed participants from 1994 to 2016, with 235 men diagnosed with PCa.

Main Results:

  • Men over 60.3 years with abnormal mitral peak E deceleration time (DT) (<140 ms or >220 ms) showed a 1.66-3.37 times higher probability of high-risk/metastatic PCa.
  • Abnormal DT (low or high) in PCa patients was associated with significantly higher overall mortality compared to normal DT.
  • A DT > 220 ms was linked to a 2.09 times higher PCa-specific mortality.

Conclusions:

  • Prediagnostic diastolic dysfunction is associated with increased risk of high-risk/metastatic PCa.
  • Abnormal cardiac function predicts higher overall and PCa-specific mortality.
  • Cardiovascular monitoring is essential for men diagnosed with prostate cancer.
