Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of AI-generated text in medical publications from the Greater Maghreb region.
  • To identify sections most affected by AI-generated content.
  • To assess the extent of Generative AI use in this specific research output.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 48 medical articles indexed on MEDLINE, published in July 2024.
  • First authors were affiliated with Greater Maghreb countries (Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania).
  • AI detection tool ZeroGPT® used to analyze articles; sections with ≥25% AI text were flagged.

Main Results:

  • 65% of articles were suspected of AI generation (sAI-g), with a median AI rate of 36.2%.
  • AI text was most prevalent in Methods (86% sAI-g, 59.3% median), Abstract (69% sAI-g, 52.2% median), and Introduction (58% sAI-g, 43.2% median).
  • The Discussion section showed the lowest AI prevalence (30% sAI-g, 10.4% median).

Conclusions:

  • Generative AI is extensively utilized in scientific medical articles from the Greater Maghreb.
  • There is a critical need to enhance medical education and English language capacity for non-native English-speaking researchers.
  • Training on the responsible application of AI in scientific writing is essential.
